Nurturing nature and our community

Over 4,000 native plants and counting…

In 2008, we launched an environmental enhancement project with Southbridge School on Environment Canterbury-owned land near the entrance to Rakaia Island. It started with just 200 native plants and with support from the Selwyn District Council we have since established over 4,000 native plants and planted over 10,000 native trees, surpassing all original goals.

To ensure their continued survival and growth, a Release Spraying Program is in place for 2022-2029, which is carried out by dedicated, experienced specialists.

We’re also proud to host annual field trips for Lincoln University, students from local school/colleges, international farming delegations and other local community groups, sharing our progress and commitment to environmental stewardship.

“The preservation of the wetlands is important to us. We spend a lot of time managing weeds around those areas and have a vigorous pest control programme in place to protect our native plantings.”

The Rakaia Island Scholarship

Established in 2022, the Rakaia Island Scholarship aims to recognise students at Lincoln University with a passion for agriculture. The scholarship awards $4,000 to a promising student and offers the opportunity to work with Rakaia Island over the summer holidays.
